Original Chile 1895 Mauser Bayonet and Scabbard, (not the1912 model) After 400yrs of Spanish rule, Chile became independent in1817. Then followed a 7yr war with adjoining Bolivia andPeru. By 1888 Chile adopted German made Mannlicher 8mm rifles. These were replaced by 7mm Chilean M1895 Mauser rifles madein Germany. This example: showsthe German Manufacturer on the Left side of the Ricasso: “Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co Solingen”. (Others were madein Germany by Stehr). The right side ricasso is stamped with Chilean crest with the five pointed star. Adjacent are the 3 intertwined rings of the famous steelworks`KRUPP`` representing the design of the 3 Railway wheels, in a continuouscircle manufacture by Alfred Krupp in 1851. Fascinating! This 1895 original has the same blade and scabbard as the1912 bayonets. BUT … The HILT of the1912 model differs significantly. The 1912 rifle had a 7mm rifle also, but the 1895 bayonetswere designed to fit with a bar on the barrel band, and so required a longercrosspiece. Secondly the 1895 model has a short pommel with a rounded beakhook, compared to the 1912 with a long pommel and angular hook. Aha! Easy to see the difference! The crosspiece isstamped G9958. The wood hilt is in exceptional condition, curved to match therounded hump of the dorsal tang. The mortise, press latch and pommel are in ++condition. An “A” is stamped on the right side of the pommel in front of thepress latch. The wood Hilt is engraved “243” and does seem to be machinemade. I have not seen such a marking in the literature, but it is probablythere somewhere. The blade, fuller and blade edge are in ++ condition, someminor rust that could be cleaned. The blade tip has a tiny ding. Scabbard: Thescabbard IS dented (SEE IMAGES). It fits and protects the blade functionallyvery well. The throat of the top mount is marked with the + and Circle of theM1895 design the oval press stud has some pitting that partially obscures theserial number of “E9??0” of the M1895 model. This is an excellent bayonet of the original M1895, and isnot the latter 1912 redesign. Bladeis 10 ins long, Overall length 15 1/2 in.
